When it comes to family photography, every session is a unique journey with the same end goal, capturing the family ties as well as each individual personality. I recently had the pleasure of working with a wonderful family of four who were knitted together in love. Despite the chilly, overcast weather, the day turned out to be perfect for family photos. We chose a picturesque farm backdrop highlighting the natural outdoor beauty of fall. In this blog post, we'll share their heartwarming story and why this session was a shining example of what family photography is all about.
Hey! Louisville Moms! Your family deserves updated portraits, every year! We specialize in creating lasting keepsakes, from Holiday Photo Cards and Albums, to wall art for every room in your home. Book your family photo session now!
Embracing Overcast Days
You might assume that a warm sunny day is the best for photography, but a cool overcast day is the ideal - even better if it's recently rained! The soft, diffused light from the cloudy sky eliminates harsh shadows and creates a flattering, even glow. For this session, the clouds acted as a natural softbox, allowing us to capture the family's natural beauty in the midday without the distraction of harsh sunlight.
On cool overcast days, dressing in layers is a fantastic idea. Mom Emily wore a blue sundress with a brown leather belt and tan suede booties, which perfectly coordinated with Dad Daniel who chose a blue and tan plaid shirt with blue jeans and brown leather shoes.
Daughters Anna (7) and Nora (4) looked adorable in their green dresses paired with cozy layers of tights, sweaters, and boots. Since the temperature had dropped nearly 20 degrees that day, those layers really helped the girls feel comfortable being outdoors for their session, and it shows in their smiles! I loved the way that mom chose green dresses that were similar but not matching, so that the girls' complemented each other while still allowing each family member to stand out with their own unique style. This individuality is what we always encourage in our clients, as it brings a genuine and personal touch to the photos.
Showcasing Diversity
One of Emily's initial concerns was ensuring that everyone's unique skin tones would be well-lit in the photos. Our aim, in every session, is to create the most flattering and representational portraits possible. As you can see from the results, the family looks absolutely stunning, showcasing their beautiful variety of skin tones. Our Certified Professional Photographer, Jill Nissen, brings her extensive education and experience to every session, ensuring that lighting, posing, and photographic techniques are expertly employed to capture the best possible images for your family. We understand the importance of making every family member look their best and take the time and care to achieve that goal.
After all, Jill is a mom herself, and knows how difficult it can be to find the perfect time when everyone is available, shop for the perfect outfits, and get everyone ready for picture day. When everything finally comes together, you want to know with 100% confidence that your efforts will result in the perfect portraits. Why take chances with a less experienced photographer to save a few bucks, when it will actually cost you more in the long run?
Natural Interactions Create Beautiful Memories
What makes these photos truly exceptional are the natural interactions between family members. We captured moments with mom and each of her girls, as well as with both girls together.
Dad had his moments with each daughter and both daughters together, too. We also captured individual shots of the girls and, of course, a memorable full family portrait. These various combinations create a diverse and beautiful album that tells the story of their family.
We utilized two unique backdrops at the farm to add variety to the images. The barn, adorned with a large wreath and hay bales, offered a rustic charm, while an open field, with trees just beginning to change color for Fall, created a serene and timeless background. This range of settings added depth and variety to this family's story and made for a lovely gallery of images, perfect for creating their first family photo album.
