I love creating custom photo sessions and drawing inspiration from my clients for their sessions! Capturing the unique personality and individuality of each of my subjects is always my top priority, and it's a challenge I enjoy. But when it comes to photographing twin sisters, the challenge becomes even greater - how can I highlight their similarities while also showcasing their differences?
Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing twin adult females for their birthday celebration. One of the sisters was visiting from out of town, while the other lived locally. I suggested that we have their photo session in downtown Louisville's museum district, which is home to some of the city's most iconic landmarks. The stunning architecture and vibrant colors of the buildings provided a beautiful backdrop for the sisters, and allowed us to capture some truly unique and memorable shots. As we covered just a few short blocks, we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather and a variety of sightseeing opportunities all around us.
One of the locations we chose to stop for photos was the exterior of the Kentucky Science Center, which provided a modern and unique backdrop for the portraits. The sleek lines and bright colors of the building contrasted beautifully with the casual clothing the sisters had chosen for the occasion.
During our phone consultation, I had asked if they would like to incorporate any props and we decided that balloons would add a festive touch and convey the fact that this was a birthday photo shoot. I was delighted when they arrived with a beautiful purple, blue, and silver balloon bouquet. The colors matched the Science Center perfectly! They held the balloons in some of the photos, which added a sense of playfulness to the images, and we left them out for some photos, so that they would have options.
Throughout the session, I worked closely with each the sisters to showcase their unique personalities and create individual portraits they would be proud to display. Even though they are twins, I quickly found it easy to tell the two of them apart.
Of course, the main focus or their session and the reason that they hired me was to commemorate their birthday with a series of photos that would capture their relationship with each other. We made our way down Main Street, which offered a more traditional cityscape for the photos. The bustling streets and historic architecture added a sense of depth and timelessness to the images, making them feel both contemporary and timeless.
One of my favorite stops during any downtown photo session is Fort Nelson Park. It’s a well-manicured park located on the corner of W. Main and 7th Street in the heart of Downtown Louisville‘s cast-iron district. In 1997, the streetscape design won an Honor Award in Urban Design from the Potomac / Maryland Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and later in 2008, the project also helped West Main Street receive distinction as one of America’s ten great streets from the American Planning Association. The new Fort Nelson Park, designed as a formal Victorian sitting park to respond to the age of the surrounding buildings, incorporated remnants of demolished cast iron buildings to form gateways into the park.
I encouraged the girls to relax and be themselves, which allowed me to capture some truly playful and silly moments as they re-enacted the famous "Singing in the Rain" dance sequence with the lamp posts in the park!
Our final stop was in the newly renovated courtyard adjacent to the Frazier History Museum and the Bourbon Trail Welcome Center, aptly named the "Gateway Garden".
The courtyard provided the perfect place to rest and relax after the session. I gave the sisters some conversation prompts to get them talking so that they could relive some special memories while I took some candid photos.
Overall, the photo session was a huge success. The sisters were thrilled with the final images, which they felt perfectly captured their unique personalities and the beauty of downtown Louisville. I was honored to be a part of their special birthday celebration, and to create photographs that they will cherish for years to come.
