Neutral and Natural Family Photo Session in Louisville KY
As a photographer, one of the things I love most is capturing the joy and beauty of families in nature. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a family by the lake in November. Despite a recent snowfall, most of the snow had already melted and the temperature was pleasant in the mid 40s. That's Louisville weather for you! The result was a stunning collection of photos that perfectly captured the essence of the family, the beauty of the landscape, and the joy of being together.
When the family arrived for their photo session, the first thing I noticed was their wardrobe. Mom had perfectly coordinated their clothing by choosing three colors in a neutral color palette: camel, khaki, and black. This complemented the natural environment and created a timeless, classic look. Dad wore a long sleeve shirt with a camel-colored jacket and khaki slacks while Mom wore a beautiful camel colored blazer, with a black shirt, leggings, and boots. Their two boys were both wearing the same vest, but in different colors - one in khaki and one in black. I love that Mom did not dress her boys in matching clothing from head to toe, but instead stuck with her color palette so that they would each stand out even when side by side. The entire family looked stylish and comfortable, which made for a more relaxed and enjoyable photo session.
As we arrived at the lake, the boys were bursting with energy and excitement. We gave them a few minutes to run around and explore the area, while the parents watched with affectionate smiles. During this time we discussed their vision for a perfect portrait, which included photos of each child alone with Mom and Dad, as well as some portraits of just the children and just the parents. I loved capturing all these combinations, which helped to create a collection of photos that truly represented each family member's personality and dynamic. The reflection of the evergreen trees on the glistening lake provided a breathtaking backdrop.
We then took a walk toward the docks, and I captured some beautiful shots of the family walking hand in hand, taking in the serene surroundings. These photos provided a more candid look of the family, having fun and enjoying their time together.
All throughout the session, I was able to create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for the family. I encouraged them to be themselves and have fun, which allowed for genuine moments of laughter, playfulness, and love to shine through in the photos. One of my favorite moments was capturing the father helping his sons to "fly"! They obviously loved it! And if you look carefully, you can see the last remaining evidence of the recent snowfall on the cold metal surface of the docks.
We continued walking and found this wooden bench by the side of the path. Now halfway through the session, the boys were more ready to pose for some seated photos. They immediately climbed on top of it, and gave me some wide smiles and playful expressions. (I may have been dancing a little bit behind the camera to coax those smiles out, lol). Their joy and enthusiasm were contagious, and the parents laughed and enjoyed the moment. These photos perfectly captured the boys' personality and I know the parents will treasure them forever.
The collection of photos from the final location was stunning. The boys stood beside me while I captured a few couple's photos for their mother and father. It was then that they told me the last time they had professional photos of just the two of them was at their wedding! I am so glad that we took the moment to capture their beautiful love for each other in the beautiful, natural setting.
The last few photos were of the family together, looking relaxed, natural, and happy. The neutral colors and classic clothing choices helped to create a timeless and elegant look, which the family can cherish for years to come.
Overall, this photo session was a perfect example of how family photography can be both beautiful and fun. By choosing a natural setting and allowing the family to be themselves, we were able to create a collection of photos that perfectly captured their dynamic and love for each other. The boys had a great time, and their joy and energy added a playful and whimsical element to the photos. It was a pleasure to work with this family, and I'm excited to create more beautiful memories for them in the future!
