Volunteer Team Headshots
One of the ways I love to give back through my photography is by volunteering on my church's photo team. I recently had the opportunity to photograph headshots for several of my team members at a recent meeting. The Volunteer Team gets together once a month for a Photo Club and in addition to socializing, we complete various challenges and hands-on activities.
The Technical Information
We offered two choices of backdrops for these Team Headshots. First, I photographed each person on a dark background with one continuous light placed 45 degrees to the right. The result was a more dramatic lighting pattern, with a light side and a shadow side to the face. To soften the images my goal was to show each person in a relaxed, playful stance. Giving the subjects something to do with their hands resulted in a genuine smile and relaxed posture.
I photographed the second set of images on a light background with a reflector board. The lighting is even across the face, for a clean, commercial headshot.
Authentic Poses & Expressions
I always try to make sure my subjects to laugh and have fun when I am taking their portraits, and the result is an authentic smile and genuine happy memories of their session time with me. These were informal portraits, and as you can see, everyone was dressed casually and with minimal makeup, to show off their everyday look. I think they look great, don't you?!
This last set is my favorite because Katie is part of my School Photography Team! We first met when we both attended the Photography Club at Southeast Christian Church. We got to know each other through our table discussions, and I was able to see several examples of her work during our monthly photo challenges. When it came time to hire an assistant for a large school job, I knew I could trust Katie to deliver!
