What to Wear to a Fall Portrait Session in Louisville KY
Have you been wondering what you should wear to your Fall Family Session? Well wonder no more! In this blog post, I will go over some tips for you to help you pick out the perfect outfits to complement the season and your style.
First let me say, I love Fall! Everything is so beautiful and cozy, from back to school to sweater weather, pumpkin spice, and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. It’s only natural to want your fall family photos set against a backdrop of brilliant red, gold, and orange, with a beautiful hazy autumn sunset. But…you do realize we live in Louisville, right?
Fall weather in Kentucky and Southern Indiana can be downright unpredictable, warm and sunny one day, cold and rainy the next. Depending on the recent temperatures and length of day, the leaves may still be green, or the trees may be completely bare! The day of your fall family session, Mother Nature might decide to serve up drizzle with a side of dismal instead of the crisp, clear weather you envisioned.
Dealing with Drizzle
It is important that you remain flexible and remember that you are going to have a great session and great pictures, no matter what. Getting the family all together isn’t always easy, so sometimes you just need to make the best of the day that everyone had available. Bundle up in lots of layers, grab your pumpkin spice latte, and your umbrella!
One of my favorites is the ShedRain Bubble Umbrella – Clear sold at Target:
If it is windy, you might opt instead for the ShedRain Vortex Compact Umbrella which has a unique vented double canopy. The special AIRVENT technology allows wind to pass right through the canopy to significantly reduce the risk of the umbrella inverting on blustery days, while protecting you from the elements. Can you tell I am slightly excited about this discovery?! The ShedRain Vortex Compact Umbrella is available in Tan, Black, Light Blue, and Moss Green, which means you can find an umbrella that coordinates well with any outfit:
However, if you want an umbrella that is practically invisible, choose the #1 best selling Totes Women’s Clear Bubble Umbrella available on Amazon. They even have a 2-pack so you and your partner can both stay dry!
If it’s simply too wet, windy, or muddy to proceed, I will contact you to discuss options. We may need to move to an alternate location, and/or the next available day and time. Just remember, it’s all good and God’s in control. Have you read about the time we had to move an entire musical festival indoors? You are going to have an amazing experience!
What to Wear Tips
Now, without further ado, here are a few tips for choosing outfits for the whole family to wear for your fall portrait session:
– Choose colors that will coordinate with the fall leaves. A warm neutral palette with colors such as oatmeal heather, cognac, slate, brown, or camel as a base, paired with hues that match the environment (earthy reds, burnt oranges, mustard yellow, etc.) will look great in your fall family photos.
- For a bolder look, choose deep, rich colors that complement autumn's spectrum: teal or cobalt blue (the opposite of pumpkin orange), plum or eggplant (the opposite of mustard yellow), olive, moss, or evergreen (the opposite of red maple leaves), cranberry or maroon (the opposite of evergreen).
– Coordinating is far better than matching. Choose colors that look nice together, but don’t fall into the trap that you all need to be wearing the exact same shirt.
– Layer up! Don’t hesitate to throw on those scarves, cardigans, blazers or hats.
– Wear shoes that fit the season. Think riding boots or comfy, fur-lined boots. Loafers and flats can also work perfectly.
And don’t forget that your session fee includes a wardrobe consultation which can be done in your home or via Zoom or Facetime.
