The Proof, or what’s in a name?
When I decided to begin my own photography business, I actually took the time to really hope and dream about life as a professional photographer.
I spent the better part of a year taking additional courses to perfect my technique and home my skills, and I did several sessions with friends to build my portfolio and practice my techniques.
I spent nearly every waking hour thinking of business names, envisioning my website and business cards, and scouting locations for potential sessions. I looked at the world as if looking through my lens, composing, framing, observing the light.
I cleaned my hard drive, bought software and filters and lenses, made my own props, and filled hours by pinning infographics and inspirational quotes and tutorials and beautiful images onto multiple Pinterest boards.
I met with fellow entrepreneurs and took workshops and met with a consultant from the small business development council who specialized in creative entrepreneurs. I researched tax laws and legal considerations and did market analysis and competitive pricing, wrote my bio and marketing materials and read several books about writing your own business plan.
What I lacked in spontaneity, I made up for in attention to detail!
When I thought of naming my business, many people suggested Jill Nissen Photography. It certainly is the trend nowadays to name your photography business with your own name + Photography, and I knew I didn’t want that, primarily because my photography is not about me, it’s about YOU!
I wanted a name that reflected a classy, elegant style. I wanted a name that would be equally appropriate for personal photography and portraiture as it would be for events and small businesses. And I was especially drawn to names that reflected my Christian faith, or any of my other interests: rock music, oceanography, or digital design.
“The Proof” – strong contender because it has multiple meanings. Let my life be the proof of your love (for KING & COUNTRY song lyrics*).
A digital or print preview of a photograph is called a “proof”. The images of a business prove who they are and what they offer their clients. The images of a couple, and their children, serve as proof of their love and commitment to each other. The Knot is a popular wedding magazine, and I believe The Proof will benefit because of the similarity to the name. The double “O” in the middle can be used to create the symbol of eternity.
I originally published this blog post in 2018, but these words were actually handwritten in my journal in 2015. The other names I wrote about are really not important now, since I ultimately settled on The Proof Photography and the business has been established for several years. Considering how long I thought about names, I just think it is interesting that I finally chose the first name I ever wrote about! And in a beautiful full circle sort of way, in November 2019 I had the great privilege of photographing my favorite Christian rock band for KING & COUNTRY when they performed at the Yum! Center along with Awaken Worship, the Southeast Christian Church worship band. Click on any image below to see the full version.
*The Proof of Your Love
for KING & COUNTRY
If I sing but don’t have love
I waste my breath with every song
I bring an empty voice, a hollow noise
If I speak with a silver tongue
Convince a crowd but don’t have love
I leave a bitter taste with every word I say
So let my life be the proof,
The proof of your love
Let my love look like You and what You’re made of
How You lived, how You died
Love is sacrifice
So let my life be the proof,
The proof of Your love
If I give
To a needy soul but don’t have love then who is poor?
It seems all the poverty is found in me
So let my life be the proof,
The proof of Your love
Let my love look like You and what You’re made of
How You lived, how You died
Love is sacrifice
Oh, let my life be the proof,
The proof of Your love
When it’s all said and done
When we sing our final song
Only love remains
Only love remains
Let my life be the proof,
The proof of Your love
Let my love look like You and what You’re made of
How You lived, how You died
Love is sacrifice
So let my life be the proof,
The proof of Your love
