Your senior pictures should reflect YOU! Of course you want to look your best, and that includes having your hair and makeup done professionally and expressing your personal fashion sense. You may be saying, "But Jill! I don't have any fashion sense! I don't even know my personal style!" Not to worry! Every one of our custom sessions comes with a complimentary wardrobe consultation to help you look and feel your best. This can be done in person or over Facetime or Zoom. Our goal is to come up with 3-6 looks depending on the senior package you've chosen.
The first place we start is in your own closet. I bet you already have some fabulous pieces, and you may want to wear some tried-and-true favorites. I highly encourage using what you already have - as long as they don't look too tired and worn out! If you need to do some shopping to refresh your wardrobe and treat yourself to a few new outfits, I recommend starting with Macy's. They always have the latest looks from all the trendy brands you love. This post can help you figure out your personal style and save you time when shopping!
Free People - The epitome of boho chic, made for adventurous spirits!
If chunky sweaters, slouchy jackets, flowing florals, and bell bottom jeans make your heart soar, Free People is the brand for you! You'll find a beautiful selection of clothing from Free People at Macy's that fits your style. From ultra-feminine dresses to cute, flirty tops, browse the collection of casual, hip designs.
TIP: Remember to show off your best assets. For example, if you have great legs, choose a short skirt and pair it with boots, ankle boots, or sandals. If you prefer your legs more covered up, choose a midi or full length skirt. Pair longer, larger skirts with a form-fitting top to avoid looking like you are wearing a tent. You can also add a belt to draw attention to a small waist, and show off well-toned arms with short sleeves.
Sanctuary - Los Angeles vibes meets New York City fashion style
Are you looking forward to graduation so you can head to NYC and take Broadway by storm, or hop the next flight to LA and start working in television or film? Do you love reading fashion magazines and watching the red carpet to see what all the celebrities are wearing so you can copy those looks for yourself? Then Sanctuary may just be the perfect brand for you!
Can you spot the stylistic differences between the Free People outfits above and the Sanctuary outfits? Sanctuary still offers flowy fabrics, but the lines are much cleaner and fashion-forward. No ruffles here! This super-chic style stands out with sophisticated florals that are bold and minimal. Sanctuary also features a lot of animal prints, tie dye, geometric prints like plaids, checks and polka dots, as well as solid colors and camo. I even found a new zebra print top while writing this blog post!
TIP: Make sure your footwear is in great condition. Nothing ruins a good outfit faster than a pair of scuffed up sneakers or battered boots. Invest in sleek, black ankle boots with at least a 1 inch heel - they'll make your legs look longer and they'll go with everything! And never underestimate the power of a good pedicure!
Dickies - Function + Fashion, what more could you ask for?
Are you ultra casual, decidedly vintage, and all about comfort? Dickies may just be the perfect brand for you! These were in fashion when I was in high school, I kid you not. I remember shopping for overalls and begging for a pair of navy blue Dickie's painter pants for Christmas when I was in 9th grade. I proudly wore those painter's pants back to school in January paired with a powder blue button down oxford cloth shirt. Funny the things we remember! But I digress...
The perfect combination of utility and fashion, Dickies' denim overalls are fashioned with tons of pockets and hammer loops, and detailed with flared legs. Dickies jumper dress has the same utilitarian vibe with a flattering skirt silhouette. Want something a bit more fashion forward? Dickies' long-sleeve jumpsuit is a streetwear-inspired pick designed with a point collar and curve-hugging silhouette. For a pop of color, pair your Dickies with a vintage inspired Tomboy T-shirt or choose a fun fashion color. Macy's has Dickies Carpenter Pant in Deep Sky, Red, or Auburn as well as Black.
TIP: Put your outfits together, with the proper undergarments and accessories, and try them on at least 3 days before your session. Each outfit should fit comfortably, allow movement, and be flattering. Keep your clothing on hangers and put all your accessories into one rolling suitcase (shoes, scarves, jewelry, etc). Now you're able to relax and focus on self-care, knowing your outfits are ready to go!
FINAL TIPS: Remember to include at least one classic look that won’t go out of style along with your casual, trendy, and/or dressy clothes. A timeless look works well for yearbook pictures and as a headshot for college applications or auditions. I suggest a simple, well-fitting top with a clean neckline for girls, or a dress shirt, tie and blazer for guys.
Senior pictures are also a great time to tell your story. Do you have a sports uniform or equipment, a musical instrument, programs and playbooks, trophies and medals from your school activities and extracurricular life? Bring them to your session! Are you going into the armed forces, going to college, or straight into your vocation? Bring along something to represent that major change in your life. If you let me know in advance what props you will be bringing, I can come up with some really creative ideas on how to incorporate them in your session!
Which of these looks were your favorite? What props would you like to include in your senior session? Let me know in the comments below!
