Graduating college is a significant achievement that deserves to be celebrated with photos! I was thrilled when Kassondra booked a special graduation portrait session for her son Christopher to commemorate his graduation from the University of Louisville. We held their session at Waterfront Botanical Gardens in downtown Louisville and the weather cooperated with a warm, sunny day.
Kassondra arrived 10 minutes early and we chatted before the graduate Christopher arrived. I grabbed a zoom lens from the car based on her description of the photos she wanted (cap and gown, closeup and environmental, and a professional headshot) and we got started close to 2:00pm. It had been a fairly overcast day until that point, but the sun came out in full force so I took advantage of the shade offered by the building. Christopher had brought his cap and gown and full graduation regalia so I incorporated that into his photos in various ways.
The spring plantings were just starting to bloom at the Waterfront Botanical Gardens and we enjoyed walking along the path and taking pictures at the waterfall. As we walked and talked, I learned that Christopher is getting his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and hopes to work in a sports-related field. Coaching, perhaps? :) I am always chatting with my clients during the session. I love getting to know them better, and I find it helps to put them at ease. This translates into comfortable and relaxed subjects, and it shows in the pictures. Don't you agree?!
Because it was becoming so bright and sunny, I encouraged them to return to the greenhouse building for the professional headshot. No one wants to be squinting in their headshots! The greenhouse is one of my favorite spots at WBG because it is flooded with diffuse, natural light. I photographed several options for Christopher's professional headshot inside the greenhouse. Which one is your favorite?
After finishing up the professional headshot images, we stepped back outside the building for the final set. Christopher took a moment for a quick wardrobe change, so that we could capture some pictures of him wearing his friend's sweater. Of course, I had to finish the session with a couple of pictures with Mother and Son together! Not only is graduating college a major accomplishment for the graduate, but it also signifies a major accomplishment for the parents who supported their child, both emotionally and financially, through their education journey. Thanks, Mom!
